Stretching the Meaning of “a Peer Relationship”

February 2, 2011

Berg passed a clip from the Albert Lea Tribune along which stirred some memories of Central’s old wrestling room and Jeff Brooke, another Albert Lea  state heavyweight champ in his senior year.  So, behold the most recent edition, Ben Berhow:

My path intersected with that of Jeff Brooke’s in my sophomore year.  I appreciated his skill and good humor as he beat the shit out of me and I heartily bid him farewell when he moved on to ply his trade at Northwestern University.

Looking at Ben Berhow’s picture I have the feeling that, but for the passage of 43 years, he and I would have had enjoyed a relationship every bit as humbling and painful as the one I shared with Jeff Brooke.

Looking back and factoring in the size of the kids today, Jeff wouldn’t have survived the first period. Though he was a fine athlete. Played a little pick up basketball with him. He could really shoot.

Brooke won the state in his junior year, lost in the first round in his senior yer, much to Paul’s uncontrollable dismay.
