Shout-Out for Gary Halma

August 17, 2010

A short shout-out and tip of the hat to Gary Halma of Brandon, SD.  This morning’s paper carries a nice article about Gary having climbed all 54 of Colorado’s 14,000 foot peaks.  Last week he finished off his list on 14,060-foot Mt. Bierstadt.  Gary completed the 14er list over period of 14 years.  Each August he set out to knock off some of the Colorado biggies.

Gary says he considers Longs Peak his most memorable climb — “nemesis” was the word used in the article.  He notched Longs on his third attempt.

BMTC and I were in the area and had Bierstadt on our short-list until we found out we couldn’t get to the trailhead from where we were.  It’s a beautiful peak and Gary was especially lucky to have been able to climb it this summer.  With Guanella Pass closed by a rock-slide, Gary was able to make the climb with a lot less company — a fitting way to complete the list.  Too bad our paths did not cross last week.  It would have been great to have bumped into him at the trailhead and been able to congratulate him on collecting all 54.

Thank you for the “shout-out!” It really felt great when I stepped on my 54th summit. Some of my best life experiences were in mountains of Colorado. Every mountain has a story, an adventure. We never knew if we would make it to the top when we left the trailhead in the morning. Some of the places we stayed, and people we met, were very memorable. If anyone is climbing the 14er’s in Colorado and has any questions about a particular climb or places to stay, eat, etc., please feel free to write me, I might have ideas. Gary
