An Unsettling Field Note

July 8, 2010

I’m passing along a post I just received from Paul Lepisto, a staffer with the Izaak Walton League of America, who’s based out of Pierre, SD.  It should especially interest those of you that have seen or been on the Big Mo —

Just a quick update and a thank you on the Lake Sharpe Clean up held last night (7/7).

We had about 30 volunteers, including John Henderson, Russ Hanson, and Larry Nelson from the Sunshine Chapter and in about 2.5 hours we collected nearly 3.5 tons (6880 pounds) of trash and litter from the Missouri River. Everything from styrofoam bait boxes to a water heater!

The clean up was organized with the Pierre chapter of SD Walleyes Unlimited, SD Game, Fish, and Parks, US Fish and Wildlife Service, the Corps, US Forest Service, High Plains Wildlife, and the City of Pierre.

Volunteers were treated to a fish fry, sponsored by SDWU following the clean up.

Thanks again to the Pierre Ikes for their great work. Lake Sharpe is prettier today because of your dedication and commitment.

Paul Lepisto
