Not Since ’68

May 24, 2010

BKM and I fled the home environs after the daughter’s wedding.  We escaped to Iowa City to visit with No. 1 son and look over the slough behind his apartment complex.  We found heat and humidity.

Yesterday was spent touring around the Amana Colonies, looking at wineries and checking out shops.  I didn’t see much of the founding culture beyond architecture; No. 1 son says it’s because they sold out to real shopkeepers to concentrate things in a specific area and keep the tourists out from under foot.  I guess it’s sort of like Indian tribes with casinos.

But last night was stunning out on the deck.  Humid, but not unduly hot — a moon moving into fullness — the smell of the slough; sweet decay, slipping around on air currents rather than breezes.  Frogs singing and a couple of Canada geese honking out on the pond.  A great place to sit and smoke a pipe and plan for the following day.

I did, but the day wasn’t cooperating.  Hot and oppressively humid.  Even the locals were shaking their heads, even at 9:00 a.m.  But I put on my walking shoes and headed downtown to do the year-around volksmarch through the historic/literary areas of the town.  It was a 10 K course that took me about 2 hours to accomplish.

Saw some spectacular old homes, dating from 1865 through 1926, and sweat like I haven’t sweat in years.  In fact it was so pronounced a condition that it reminded me of wrestling practices back in college.  So I decided to weigh in after I returned to the apartment.  And much to my wife’s surprise, and horror, I discovered that I’d dropped 5 pounds from my weigh in from the evening before.  Not a wrestling room record; my personal  best back then was 8 pounds in one practice, but this effort served to impress the onlookers.

Tomorrow it’s supposed to be cooler and less humid.  I’ve got my eye set on Davenport.  It’s got a volksmarch along the river that I want to do.   No. 1 son and BKM say they want to go too.  We’ll see.

The great, undeniable truth is that Iowa, fittingly, has just as bad an environment as a wrestling room.

I seem to recall BKM complaining the other day that Rapid was too cold. Maybe a little of an Iowa summer will give her some perspective.

You’re probably right. I see by WeatherBug that this morning it’s 47 degrees in Rapid and Box Elder Creek is running 150 feet wide coming out of the Hills — three days of severe storms it says.

Here I awake to rain and cooler temps today, but no one seems to want to get motivated to go anywhere. The forecast is for showers — but what does that mean? I’ve lost my feel for what the Midwestern weather patterns are.

Iowa doesn’t have much going for it, but at least it doesn’t have Paul.

True. But then, Dan Gable wouldn’t have let him in the state to begin with. Another plus that I neglected to mention was finding hot German potato salad at the Ox Yoke in Amana that rivaled your mother’s.

Ah, yes. I remember it well.
