Appropriated from 1410 Oakwood

March 29, 2010

Brother Berg was flashing this and muttering about barred owls in his house.  I decided to appropriate the picture.  This is Larry Ravenhorst hanging onto his 52-inch muskie.  That is Muskellunge, or Esox masquinongy, to the more critical readers among you.

This is the game fish of game fish for “dos’sa us in da Nort Country.”   Countless generations of impressionable young boys in Minnesota and Wisconsin were raised on stories about these monster fish — how the guides carried .38 Colts to protect their clients when the fish were landed; the terrible loss of blood from attack wounds; and incredible rapacious appetite of the fish which ranged from your late uncle’s railroad watch to John Deere wheel weights.

Oh, these are the mighty fish.  Brother Ravenhorst has done well and acquitted himself in the finest Minnesota tradition.

I told Larry he could quit fishing now. From that day forward, everything he does in a boat is an anti-climax. At least it wasn’t wasted on a 14 year old kid who can’t appreciate what he has.
