John Randle

February 7, 2010

This morning our household was cheered to learn that John Randle, another great defensive tackle for the Vikings, had been elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.  He spent at least a decade with the Vikes; entertaining me with his speed and strength as a premier pass-rusher.  Like Alan Page, on occasion officials would erroneously penalize Randle for being off-side; he was that quick.

The paper notes that Randle had 137 1/2 career sacks.  I have never understood why the Vikes saw fit to turn him loose.

One of my favorite pictures of Randle was the one that Lee brought home after attending the John Randle Football Camp in St. Paul back in 1998.  It was the standard “take your picture with” photo of the camper and Randle standing together.  Lee was going into his sophomore year that fall and there he was, standing with John Randle.  Lee was just as big as Randle, but it was also clear why Randle was the force that he was.  It was a nice picture of a kid with a great pro-lineman.

Now, if only the powers-that-be will pull their heads out and elect Chris Carter.  I can’t believe that this is the third year he’s been left out.
