Time hangs heavy

January 8, 2010

I find myself in a sad state of affairs — I am preoccupied with trying to get through a draft environmental impact statement and organizing cogent comments before the closing bell sounds on January 11th.  At the same time I’m wallowing in bits of trivia, like the tally on the state’s mountain lion season is now 10 taken, 7 of which were female.

I just finished up the application interview for Medicare, which seems to make me ache more than usual.  Wistfully,  I chalk it up to depression bought on by extreme cold weather.  But remembering the severe pain caused by post-holing through a thigh deep snow drift during last week’s (and the last) deer hunt leads me to believe its the reality of old age.

And Lee called in from northern Minnesota last night.  He reports he is “having a blast.”  He’s running around the North Woods with a gang of people “who always want to be doing something.”  The night before last they said the hell with staying in the lodge and went out into the sub-zero on a hike to look at the stars.

Berg’s right, I’m jealous.

What’s the lad experiencing for low temps up there?

Uncharacteristically, western SoDak’s “Banana Belt” registered sub-zero temperatures last week that beat the numbers in northern Minnesota. But looks like that is changing — damn near shorts and T-shirt weather here today, and the forecast I saw for NoMinn will asure the kid gets his due.
