Farewell to a “Busby Babe”

December 31, 2009

The years ends with the news of the death of Albert Scanlon, one of Manchester United’s “Busby Babes.”  Scanlon was 74 years of age.  He came through United’s youth program and made his debut with the Red Devils in 1954

Scanlon survived the 1958 aircrash that most people agree has defined Manchester United.  After playing a European Cup match the team’s plane cashed during take-off from the Munich airport during a blizzard.  Eight United players and three officials were killed.  Scanlon survived, suffering a broken leg and fractured skull.  He recovered to play for United in the 1958/1959 season, scoring 16 goals.  Scanlon left United in 1960 after 127 senior appearances for the team.
